Story
James was born to a noble family in the grand city of Ul'dah to a loving Hyur couple named Cecily and Ethan Rothe, three years after the birth of his brother Jacob. Though stress in the family often ran high as the family struggled to raise their two sons into the world of diplomacy, they tried to make the best of their situation by attempting to maintain a close, tight-knit relationship. Unfortunately, as the boys grew older, a wedge grew between them as James discovered his talent as a swordsman. During their early teens, Jacob found his place in the political world of nobility, thus earning their father's endless praise and favoritism. James, however, refused to lose sight of his dream to one day fight alongside the great paladins that he idolized, and decided to take his future into his own hands. And so, after a screaming match with his family on a night of pouring rain, James crossed a line in his life by running away from home at the young age of fourteen to begin pursuing his dream.Shortly after, James began training under the mentorship of a renowned swordsman on the outskirts of Ul'dah. Quickly proving himself as a prodigy swordsman, as well as slipping up and mentioning his current homelessness, James was offered a room and began training every day. On his fifteenth birthday, James was gifted a sword of silver and gold, and was told that he was well on his way to becoming a paladin. When James was sixteen, his mentor had requested him to gather a bundle of magically enhanced, pain-soothing tea leaves for his old joints. This special blend of tea leaves and aether could only be purchased from a Coven on the other side of the city, so James left early that morning and grabbed a ride on a hay cart to take him around the city. Once he arrived at the Coven, James met someone that would change his life forever: Alender Aikosi.Alender Aikosi was a white-scaled Au'ra of his same age, with bright blue hair and shining grey eyes, but none of this registered upon their first meeting of James tripping over Alender, who was lying in the grass in the front yard of the Coven. The two laughed it off, introduced themselves, and from then on, the pair were close friends. So close, in fact, that everyone in their lives noticed the for-the-better change in the both of them.James knew that he was in love with Alender when they were seventeen. The two boys had stolen a bottle of expensive alcohol from Alender's older sister Yendry and, not knowing just how high the alcohol content in the drink was, got so drunk off of it that, the next morning after passing out, Alender didn't even remember that James had kissed him that night. In all honesty, James was also quite foggy on the matter, but when they'd woken, cuddling on the floor, to Yendry's laughter and her wife Rose's cooing, he realized that there was no one else he wanted to wake up to.James was eighteen when Alender was murdered. The day prior, James had sent out a letter to the Au'ra, stating that, due to his brother Jacob’s (With whom he’d recently tentatively reconciled with) upcoming wedding to his longtime partner Maxine, James finally realized that he should confess something. James, in his letter, requested Alender to come to his and his mentor's house so that the words could be spoken in person. Several weeks passed with no answer from Alender, and, unable to leave the house on his at-the-time broken leg, James grew worried. It was only when Yendry finally came by, two months later with his letter in her hand, that he received the horrible news. She told him of what had happened, that Alender had been found murdered along with a friend named Okiku in a back alley of Ul'dah, and that there were no leads, no evidence, and no suspects. As he collapsed to his knees, she went down with him and embraced him in a tight hug. She wept with him when she told him that she'd found the letter James had written, unopened, on Alender's desk. Yendry told him that Alender had felt the same, whether or not he'd read the letter, and he could swear the words tore his heart in two.James stayed far away from the Coven after that, distancing himself from everyone and everything, and allowed himself to become stone-hearted as he threw himself into his training, his addictions, and his vengeance. After the quick-to-follow death of his mentor, James fell into a life of vigilantism and theft, setting up corrupt politicians to be arrested by planting evidence or stealing from the rich to give to the poor. With the friendship of a informant/prostitute named Amber, James became a shadow in the night for two years, secretly spiraling into an obsession with resurrection and dark magick, despite his inability to use it. On a drunken night of anger and frustration with his inability to bring Alender back to life, James threw a bottle into his fireplace, and his world went up in smoke.A last second mental plea for an old friend led Yendry to his door, where she was able to bring James back from the brink of death. Unfortunately, James wasn't all she brought back.James was 21 and sleeping when Amber was murdered, awakening the next morning with no memory of having committed it.Such similar occurrences would happen at least once a week for the next two years to any remorselessly bad person he could find through his ever-growing network, until James wasn't even sure if he, or whatever had latched onto him from The Void, was the real James. At 24, a paladin as he'd always wished even though it now tasted sour, James found his way back to the Coven to uncover the truth of who is responsible for turning his world cold.
